Natalie Diaz
Poet
Natalie Diaz is a celebrated poet, educator, and language activist, known for her powerful work rooted in Indigenous experience, identity, and language. She was born and raised in the Fort Mojave Indian Village in Needles, California, and is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Tribe. Diaz’s poetry blends personal narrative with broader cultural and political themes. Her first collection, When My Brother Was an Aztec (2012), won an American Book Award, and her second book, Postcolonial Love Poem (2020), won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and was a finalist for several major awards. In addition to her literary achievements, Diaz is a committed advocate for Indigenous language preservation, working to revitalize the Mojave language.
